Money word

Return

The gain or loss an investment produces, often shown as a percentage.

Return is how much an investment made or lost over a period — up 8%, down 3%, and so on. Over long stretches, a diversified stock portfolio has historically produced positive returns, but never in a straight line. Past returns never guarantee future ones.

Explain it to your kid

"How much an investment gained or lost."
