Money word

Share

One unit of ownership in a company.

A share is a single piece of a company you can own. Buy one share and you're a part-owner, entitled to a slice of the company's future growth and, sometimes, its dividends. Big companies are divided into billions of shares, so one share is a small — but real — piece.

Explain it to your kid

"One small piece of a company you can own."
