Money word

Stock Market

The marketplace where shares of public companies are bought and sold.

The stock market is where buyers and sellers trade shares of companies. Its daily moves can look dramatic, but over long horizons it has trended upward through many ups and downs. For a kid's account, the market is less a place to watch daily and more a garden to let grow.

Explain it to your kid

"Where people buy and sell pieces of companies."
