My prices look frozen / haven't updated in a while
If the prices on the dashboard look frozen at yesterday's close, the most common reason is that the stock market is closed.
Most likely cause: market is closed
US stock markets are open:
- Monday-Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern.
- Closed on weekends and most federal holidays.
When the market is closed, the last price recorded before close sticks — there's no new price to show until trading resumes the next session. The dashboard will say "Market closed" in the corner when this is the case.
Less likely but possible: connection expired
If the market is open and prices still look stale, your brokerage connection may have expired:
- Open /dashboard/connections.
- Look for a yellow or red status dot on any connection.
- Click Reconnect and follow the sign-in flow.
After reconnecting, the dashboard refreshes within a minute.
Rare but real: provider hiccup on our side
Our price provider can occasionally have brief outages. The dashboard auto-falls-back to the most recent cached price (up to 18 hours old) so it doesn't show a blank or scary message. If prices are stale for more than an hour during market hours and your connections look healthy, contact support — there may be a known issue on our end we're fixing.
Specific tickers that look stuck
A single ticker showing a stale price while others update is usually one of:
- A delisted stock or fund — no new trades are happening, so no new price exists.
- A thinly traded stock — there can be 15+ minutes between trades on a small ticker even during market hours.
- A mutual fund — mutual fund prices (NAVs) update once per day after market close, not in real time. This is normal.
If you're seeing this on a major ETF (VOO, VTI, SPY) or a big stock (AAPL, MSFT, etc.) during market hours, that's not normal — contact support.
What to tell a kid
If the kid asks "why isn't anything changing?", honest kid-friendly answer: "The market's taking a break — it's closed on weekends and at night. It'll start moving again in the morning."
