What does the Holdings list show?

The Holdings section of the dashboard shows every stock, ETF, and fund a kid currently owns, with their share count and current value.

What each row means

For each holding you'll see:

  • Symbol — the ticker, like AAPL or VOO.
  • Shares — how many shares the kid owns. Brokerages sometimes show fractional shares (e.g. 0.5 of a share), which we round to two decimals for display.
  • Value — share count × current market price, in dollars.
  • Today's change — how much this holding moved today (in dollars and percent), if the market is open.

Tap any row to drill into that holding for company info, price history, and how it's done over various timeframes.

How the numbers update

Holdings are refreshed:

  • Share counts: roughly every few hours, when we re-sync with your brokerage. New shares from a dividend reinvestment or a transfer can take that long to appear.
  • Prices: every minute the market is open. When the market is closed, prices freeze at the last close.

If a share count looks wrong, give it a few hours — your brokerage may not have settled the trade yet on their side.

Holdings I see but my kid no longer owns

If a holding was sold yesterday and still appears today, it's usually because the trade hasn't fully settled at the brokerage yet. Settlement typically takes 1-2 business days. The holding will drop off automatically once settled.

Cash balance

The cash portion of an account (uninvested cash, dividends waiting to be reinvested, settled trade proceeds) is shown separately and counted toward the account's total value. If a kid asks "why isn't that cash a stock?", the short answer: it's already money — there's just nothing for it to be doing right now.
