Why do I need to reconnect my brokerage sometimes?
Brokerage connections occasionally need to be refreshed — usually because your bank asked for a re-authorization or your saved permission expired. This is normal and happens to most users a few times a year.
When this happens
You might see one of these on /dashboard/connections:
- A connection with a yellow or red status dot.
- A "Reconnect" button next to one of your accounts.
- Stale numbers on the dashboard, or a "demo data" fallback.
How to reconnect
- Open /dashboard/connections.
- Find the account with the warning and click Reconnect.
- Sign back into your bank in the popup that appears. You may need to approve the connection again.
- The dashboard refreshes within a minute once the reconnection completes.
Why this happens
Banks require periodic re-authorization for safety. The most common triggers:
- You changed your bank password. Your saved permission becomes invalid as soon as the password rotates.
- Bank-side security review. Some institutions ask for fresh approval every 90-180 days as a standard practice.
- You enabled or changed multi-factor settings. A new MFA factor often invalidates older connections.
- Long stretch with no activity. Banks sometimes expire idle connections.
Reconnecting takes about 30 seconds and is the same flow as the original connection.
If reconnect doesn't work
- Make sure your bank password works directly on your bank's website first.
- Try disconnecting fully (the trash icon next to the account) and re-adding it from scratch.
- If your bank is showing maintenance or downtime, wait an hour and try again.
- If none of the above helps, contact support — there may be a bank-side issue we can help diagnose.
